" . . . the health of our civilization, the depth of our awareness about the underpinnings of our culture, and our concern for the future can all be tested by how well we support our libraries." -- Carl Sagan The Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District was established on the 50th anniversary of the Colorado Springs Public Library – March 11, 1955, and incorporated in 1969 as a nonprofit organization. The Friends is a "constant, pervasive and ever vociferous advocate for the library" whose passion is to have the best library possible. Today, with over 1,000 members, the Friends sponsors and supports numerous programs and events to further individuals’ enjoyment of reading and love for books. Programs include: Bookstores at the East Library and Penrose Library Bookcases sponsored by Branch Friends at the smaller branches Frank Waters Award for Excellence in Literature The Betty Field Memorial Youth Writing Contest Baby’s First Book program for newborns and their parents "Better" and "Bargain" book sales Carla Berney Computer Learning Lab, of the LitSource adult literacy program Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District Annual Awards Banquet Publication of books by local authors Bambi Venetucci, John Holley, and Marshall Sprague The Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District provides financial support to the library for: All Pikes Peak Reads Old Colorado Carnegie Library Campaign Reflections Calendar Holiday books for children Individual branch projects There are Branch Friends groups at each branch. If you'd like to volunteer or become involved with them please contact your favorite branch.
