Colorado Springs Komen Affiliate names Executive Director

The Colorado Springs Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has hired it’s first Executive Director. Kimberli Jeter has over 16 years of experience in the design, delivery, management, and evaluation of complex international development programs. Her key focal area in the past include: community development, microfinance/ small business lending, business development services, women’s entrepreneurship, non-governmental organization (NGO) development, and grassroots democratic development. Ms. Jeter’s specialized experience in those focal areas includes program design, management, and evaluation; budgeting, financial management and portfolio analysis; needs assessments, training and technical assistance, quality control, and effective cross-functional team leadership. She has conducted extended field work in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Ukraine. Kimberli has a Bachelors degree in International Development and Economics as well as numerous continuing education seminars and coursework.

2008 Colorado Breast Cancer Resources Directory now available

The 2008 Colorado Breast Cancer Resources Directory is now available in print and online at http://www.breastcancercolorado.org/. This annual directory may be obtained in both English and Spanish and contains an introduction to breast cancer screening and treatment procedures. The bulk of the information contained in this directory are related to support groups and organizations available to breast cancer survivors in Colorado. Visit the website to view the online directory, or to request a print copy of your own. Print copies in both English and Spanish are also available in the Community Breast Cancer Resource Center located in the Penrose Library downtown.
Another resource that has been recently received by the CBCRC, and extra copies are available for interested parties, is the Cure Magazine Cancer Resource Guide 2008 Edition. This special edition of Cure Magazine is produced in association with the American Cancer Society with the intent of providing up to date, accurate information about different cancers and their treatments in simple terms for patients, survivors and caregivers. Check out the table of contents online, and then come to the CBCRC to look at an issue, or get your own copy depending on availability.

Income Tax Checkoff Fund

When you file your 2007 Colorado Income Tax Return, this year you will have the option to check line 46 on the Colorado Form 104 to make a donation to the Colorado Breast and Women’s Reproductive Cancers Fund. The donation will assist Coloradans through education, treatment and survivorship, and all funds will stay in Colorado. For more information, go to www.cancercoalition.org.

Colorado Springs Independent Article on genetic testing

The November 15-21 issue of the Colorado Springs Independent features an article on genetic testing for cancer genes. If you have considered this process, you may want to read the article. Also, PPLD has some books and videos regarding the link between breast cancer and genetics, you may find a few of them here. Finally, if you have had genetic testing and are looking for a support group, you may want to familiarize yourself with FORCE, Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered.

Women’s Health Conference, September 29

MERIC – the Medical Education and Research Institute of Colorado presents the 5th Annual Women’s Health Conference on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at the Antler’s Hilton Hotel, 4 South Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903. The conference offers a variety of speakers 8:30am – 12:15pm, sponsored in part by Susan B. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Information will focus on breast cancer, heart health, lungs, body types, and yoga. Registration is required with a fee of $7.00 — scholarships are available. 2007 Komen Colorado Springs Race for the Cure

There is still time to register for the 2007 Komen Colorado Springs Race for the Cure that will be held this coming Sunday, September 9 at the Garden of the Gods. This year’s event activities include a new venue, and new activities. What has not changed is that 75% of money raised by this event stays in El Paso, Teller and Pueblo counties to support breast cancer programs and activities.

American Cancer Society’s Cancer Resource Centers

The American Cancer Society will be opening two Cancer Resource Centers in Colorado Springs, with Grand Openings being held next week.
The Penrose Cancer Center, 2222 North Nevada, will have its Cancer Resource Center grand opening Tuesday, July 24, from 2:00-4:00 PM, with a ceremony at 2:15.
The Memorial Cancer Center, 525 North Foote, will have its Cancer Resource Center grand opening Wednesday, July 25, from 12:00-1:30 PM, with a ceremony at 12:30.
Please stop by to see these wonderful facilities designed to help cancer patients.

Fundraiser for Memorial Cancer Center

This coming Saturday, July 14, will be the 16th Annual Run for Hope 5K run/3K walk at 7 AM in Memorial Park. This fund raiser benefits that Memorial Health System Cancer Center Circle of Hope Fund, which provides assistance for cancer patients undergoing treatment at Memorial Hospital. Volunteers needed for National Cancer Institute Study

The National Cancer Institute (NCI), a federal agency that is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the George Washington School of Public Health, would like to talk to women who are providing care for a family member or friend with cancer. The study is interested in the care giving experience and coping mechanisms.

If you are:

  • Female
  • Between the ages of 31 and 80
  • Currently providing care for someone over the age of 20 with cancer
  • OR you provided care for someone over the age of 20 with cancer at end of life within the last year

Please call them toll-free at 1-888-249-0029, Monday through Friday, between 9 AM and 5 PM EDT. Participating in this study involves a total of 15-20 minutes by phone.
