ABSTRACT: Records produced by, collected by or relating to Henry Chase Stone, a prominent businessman of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and a veteran of World Wars I and II. Included in this collection are correspondence, photographs, awards, clippings and other materials documenting portions of Stone's life and activities. Chase Stone moved to the Colorado Springs area in 1924 to receive treatment for tuberculosis at Cragmor Sanatorium. In 1928 he entered local business as the director of the Pikes Peak Flying School. Stone joined the First National Bank of Colorado Springs in 1935 and was named its president in 1951, a position he held until his death in 1966. Throughout his time in Colorado Springs, Stone was actively involved in numerous civic organizations, often as an officer or member of the board. The bulk of this collection dates from 1917, when Stone enlisted in the U. S. Navy, to 1946, when he resigned his commission as head of the Recruitment and Manning Organization of the War Shipping Administration.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:  Henry Chase Stone was born in New Brighton, New York on March 5, 1900, to Medad E. and Emma Bones Stone. In 1917, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. In 1918 he was commissioned as Ensign and assigned to the U. S. S. George Washington, troop transport and official ship of the President of the United States. Following the war he attended Phillips-Exeter Academy and then studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University. Stone was forced to leave Cornell in 1923, just short of graduation, because of worsening tuberculosis. Unable to regain his health in New York, he moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, taking up residence at Cragmor Sanatorium in June of 1924.

In 1928 Stone, though still living at Cragmor, became the director of the Pikes Peak Flying School, later known as Pikes Peak Air Service. In 1929 Stone sold this business to Pikes Peak Air Commerce, but continued in their employ until 1931, when he became a broker with Boettcher-Newton.

In 1935, Stone was hired as a cashier by the First National Bank in Colorado Springs. By 1936 he was Assistant Vice President of the bank and president of the Pikes Peak Council of Boy Scouts of America. In 1939 Stone was elected president of the Winter Night Club, established years earlier "to promote good fellowship among its members and guests, and the tolerant discussion of economic, municipal and other questions of the day." On January 2, 1940, Henry Chase Stone married Arvilla May Gardner in New Orleans. May had been a fellow patient at Cragmor and had known Chase since at least 1927. 1940 was also the year that Stone was promoted to Vice President at First National Bank and appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind by the governor of Colorado, Ralph Carr.

As a prominent member of a dynamic and growth-oriented Chamber of Commerce, Chase Stone, "on loan" from the bank, headed to Washington D.C. in the fall of 1941. His mission was to get Colorado Springs selected as the site for a new army cantonment, the idea being that defense dollars would bolster the city's tourism-based economy, which was suffering from the depression and the war overseas. After four months of intense lobbying by Stone and others, the $25 million camp, Camp Carson, was awarded to the Springs in January of 1942. In recognition of this and other accomplishments on behalf of the city, Stone was named president of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce in March of 1942. That same year Stone was made president of the Board of Directors of the Boys' Club of Colorado Springs.

Throughout 1942 Stone worked actively to reenlist in the military and serve in World War II. His persistence paid off and in January of 1943 he was assigned to the Recruitment and Manning Organization (RMO) of the War Shipping Administration (WSA). In 1944 he was promoted to Assistant Deputy Administrator for Recruitment and Manning, where he remained until his resignation in March of 1946.

In the spring of 1946, Chase Stone returned to his position as Vice President and Director at First National Bank and champion of Colorado Springs' economic development. He figured prominently in the relocation of numerous businesses from other areas to the Springs, including the Timken Roller Bearing Company and Farmers Insurance Group. For such accomplishments Stone was named the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph Man of the Year in 1949. Stone was also instrumental in getting the Colorado Springs baseball club, the Sky Sox, into the Class A Western League, and in 1950 he became team president.

In July of 1951, H. Chase Stone become the 7th president of the First National Bank and, consequently, one of the most powerful and influential men in Colorado Springs. He continued to attract business and industry to the region and played a major role in bringing military facilities, including the Air Force Academy and Ent Air Force Base (home of the North American Air Defense Command), to the city. Stone remained active in community and business organizations as well, serving through the years as El Pomar Foundation President and Chairman, El Pomar Investment Corporation Director, Trustee of Colorado College, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Fountain Valley School for Boys, and Director of the Broadmoor Hotel, among others.

In 1964, Chase Stone, Russell Tutt, of El Pomar Investment, and others undertook a massive redevelopment campaign in an effort to revitalize downtown Colorado Springs. El Pomar Investment Corp., with First National Bank as its trustee, purchased the site of the old Antlers Hotel at Cascade and Pikes Peak Avenues. By 1966 this site, with its brand-new luxury Antlers Plaza Hotel and 16 story Holly Sugar Building, was hailed as the city's "greatest shot-in-the-arm since the Cripple Creek gold rush."

H. Chase Stone died in New York on October 9, 1966. The Antlers Plaza was renamed the Chase Stone Plaza in memoriam and as an acknowledgement of all that Stone had done for Colorado Springs. May Gardner Stone lived until 1975. They had no children.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:  This collection includes correspondence, photographs, diaries, awards, clippings, newspapers, publications, art, artifacts, and papers produced by, collected by or relating to Henry Chase Stone, one of the most prominent businessmen of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and a veteran of World Wars I and II. Although these materials date from 1900 to 1967, the bulk of this collection dates from 1917, when Stone enlisted in the U. S. Navy, to 1946, when he resigned his commission as head of the Recruitment and Manning Organization of the War Shipping Administration.

This collection is strongest in its documentation of Chase Stone's activities in World War I and World War II, and his efforts, as a member of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce, to bring an army cantonment to the city. Materials from World War I include diaries, personal correspondence, photographs and a scrapbook. Materials from World War II include official correspondence and paperwork, photographs taken by the United States Signal Corps, and publications about various battles. There are also a few letters from May Stone to Chase and a few letters to and from Chase's parents. There is a great deal of correspondence, mostly addressed to Stone, which covers the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce to bring an army cantonment to Colorado Springs in 1941 and 1942.

Between 1919 and 1939 Stone battled with the Veterans Bureau (later the Veterans Administration) over disability benefits. Initially the struggle concerned whether or not Stone had contracted TB while in the service, then moved to the amount of disability he was entitled to. The subseries "War Risk Insurance" documents Stone's communication with the government concerning this matter. It is possible that the letter from Franklin D. Roosevelt, filed with personal correspondence, was in response to a letter from Stone outlining these struggles.

Other highlights of the collection include the large number of awards and certificates received by Stone, emphasizing his active involvement in a wide range of community activities, organizations and events. A photograph album from the 1920's depicts life at Cragmor Sanatorium and Stone's involvement with the Pikes Peak Flying School and the Pikes Peak Air Service. Personal photographs show Stone at different phases of his life and clippings mark his professional development during the wars and in Colorado Springs. A 1935 letter from Stone to his parents provides an excellent account of the flood that hit Colorado Springs that year. And finally, a number of the materials in the subseries "Colorado Springs Associations and Businesses" help document business in the city during Stone's lifetime.

There is, however, very little personal or business correspondence from Stone in this collection, and none at all after 1946. And despite Stone's tremendous impact on Colorado Springs, little except the clippings and the awards and resolutions mark his involvement or his progress.
