Frequently Asked Questions

How many photographs are in the collections?

There are approximately 500,000 images in the Pikes Peak Library District Photo Archives, including prints, negatives and slides.

Do you have other photos that are not online?

The photos online represent only about one percent of the photographs in the Pikes Peak Library District Photo Archives. As our photo digitization efforts continue over the coming years, more images will be added.

Do you have a photo of my house?

While we do have some photographs of individual houses (most notably, houses photographed as part of the Westside Historic District survey in the early 1980s), we have very few early pictures of residences. However, early street scenes often show buildings, including residences, along the street, although they may not be the main focus of the photo. We do not have a listing of houses in our photographs. Street scenes are filed by street name.

When will the rest of your photos be online?

Photo digitization is an ongoing project. At present, we are committed to adding about 1,500 digitized images a year to our online collection. Photographs are selected for digitization based on subject matter, quality and demand. In some cases, copyright restrictions may limit our use of the material.

Can I print a photo from this website?

You may print an image from this website at no charge for research or educational use. Please make sure the copyright notice on the page is kept with the image.

Can I order a print to hang in my house or give as a gift?

Prints may be ordered for personal use by completing, printing and mailing in our Collections Use Agreement, Conditions of Use, and Photograph Order Form. Fees for reprints are listed on the Processing Fees page.

Displaying a print in an office or other business is considered commercial use and additional fees apply. Please see the Commercial Use Fees page for more information.

How much does it cost to get a copy of a photo?

Fees for reprints of photographs are listed on the Processing Fees page. For complete ordering information, please see Purchasing Information.

Can I order online and pay by credit card?

Not at this time. At present, payment must be made by check or money order and sent with your order form.

How long does it take to get a copy print made?

Generally, expect about 10 working days from the receipt of your order to completion of the print. Delivery time will vary according to your location and delivery method.

How can I see the photos that are not yet online?

Photographs in the Pikes Peak Library District Photo Archives may be viewed at the Special Collections department in the 1905 Carnegie Library adjacent to the Penrose Library at 20 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs. For more information, please Contact Us or call (719) 531-6333 x2252.

I am writing a family history and would like to use one of your photos in my book. How do I get permission?

Please see the Purchasing Information page for ordering information and our Collections Use Agreement and Conditions of Use. If the book is being published and sold, a Commercial Use Fee may be applicable.

Can I use one of your photos on my website?

Publishing photographs on websites is considered a commercial use and a Commercial Use Fee will be assessed. Please see the Collections Use Agreement and Conditions of Use on the Purchasing Information page for more information.

Can I get a digital copy of a photograph?

Digital versions of photographs are available. Fees for these copies are listed on the Processing Fees page. However, if the image is to be used in a commercial publication or on a website, a Commercial Use Fee will also be required.
