Closures

It would be helpful to know the library's snow closure policy and also an after hours number to call in case a group needs to confirm openings/closures.

Good idea. I'll get that

Good idea. I'll get that information posted. Thanks!

Veterans' Day

Just curious as to why Veterans' Day, November 11 is not observed. Thanks.

Holidays

The Library has ten holidays that we are closed. When deciding on the days to close the Board of Trustees and the Leadership Team consider whether we will have adequate patron visits to stay open. Since we are librarians we have done a little research related to your question. In 1971 Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October. In 1978, it was moved back to its original celebration on November 11 whatever day that falls on. Since this change, there has been a trend against being closed on the holiday. Many schools and colleges remain open and that is true in our area as well. Banks, the post office and many though not all, government offices close.

In the case of the holidays that we are closed, they are so widely celebrated that we would probably not have a lot of patron visits. To honor our veterans, we have celebrated this important holiday by hosting Veterans programs. We have had two panel discussions which were held live and presented on Library T.V. Veterans from WWII, Korea, and Iraq served on the panels. In addition we have conducted Veterans interviews to be sent to the Smithsonian. Veterans employed by the Library have put together these programs. I hope that answers your question. Thank you for asking. Sydne Dean, Associate Director of Public Services
