I saw Theatreworks and New York’s Flying Machine’s presentation of Alice in Wonderland this past weekend and boy was it a wild ride! It was cleverly conceived and superbly acted on a imaginatively constructed stage. I was very entertained and amused by the antics of Tweedles Dee and Dum in particular.

Alice’s last shows were this past weekend, but Theatreworks has many other productions coming your way. You can check their schedule here. Sometimes you can pick up tickets for free the day of show. You can’t beat that deal, so get some culture and go the theater!

My husband and I are reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland out loud to each other. We are currently at “The Lobster Quadrille”. So far, I think the Cheshire Cat is the most reasonable, and therefore refreshing, of the characters. However, I find myself preferring the Mock Turtle, with its cow-head and cloven hooves a personification of its pun-driven conversation with Alice and the Gryffon. I’ve always had a weakness for puns…

September is a serendipitous season for Pikes Peak Library District. Circus Chimera is coming to Colorado Springs to present a special production of Alice in Wonderland under the big top on September 28, 29, 30, and October 1. Beautiful weather and live performances made the Saturday, September 24 kick-off party for All Pikes Peak Reads the best yet in the program’s five year history. More than 1,000 people attended to play flamingo croquet and see live jazz by the Colorado Springs Conservatory, a skit by Manitou Art Theater, 14-foot Jabberwocky puppets courtesy of Razzamataz Productions, and a finale by the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony and Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale.

APPR invades the Colorado Springs Execs Breakfast

More than 120 people attended the Execs Breakfast at the Antlers Hilton on Wednesday, September 20. Executive Director Paula Miller gave a presentation on business lessons based on characters from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. She was joined by East Library’s Suzy Lewis, who dressed as the White Rabbit and kept the crowd entertained. PPLD distributed copies of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to all attendees.

All Pikes Peak Reads Kicks Off!

All Pikes Peak Reads kicks off its fifth year on Sunday, September 24 at Acacia Park downtown (225 N. Nevada Ave.). This year’s book selection is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, a classic work that has been read and discussed by millions of whimsy lovers since its publication in 1865. Fall down the rabbit hole with us at Acacia Park, where we’ll have costumed characters, giveways, games for kids of all ages, and live performances by Colorado Springs Conservatory, Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale, Colorado Springs Youth Symphony, Manitou Art Theater, and Razzamataz.

Free fun kicks off fifth All Pikes Peak Reads

On Saturday, August 26 more than 550 people attended the opening of a new city park - Ye Olde Castlewood Park - designed with thematic elements from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. 250 free copies of the book were given to children who attended the event, in addition to lots of free games, food, and fun featuring costumed characters like the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, the White Rabbit, and of course, Alice.

If you missed the party, you can still get involved! Don’t be late for this very important date: All Pikes Peak Reads kicks off its fifth year on Sunday, September 24 at Acacia Park downtown with live performances by Colorado Springs Conservatory, Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale, Colorado Springs Youth Symphony, Manitou Art Theater, and Razzamataz.

Alice in Wonderland-themed park opening!

Join Pikes Peak Library District on Saturday, August 26 for the opening of a new Colorado Springs park, themed after Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. A free celebration for all ages will be held at Ye Old Castlewood Park, located off Happy Meadows Trail, from noon to 4 p.m.

Learn more about this year’s 2006 All Pikes Peak Reads book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, while enjoying this unique, mystical park with castle-themed play equipment and a playground with both tiny and grand proportions.

Meet characters who will sign your own copy of the book. There will also be food, games and a grand prize drawing for an Extreme Bedroom Makeover in the theme of Alice In Wonderland!

APPR is a community-wide literary program designed to get everyone in El Paso County to read and discuss the same book each year. Come learn more about the book everyone will be talking about this fall!
