Quick! Read it Before it Comes to the Movies!
The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo is coming to the movies. But, of course it is! It’s a Newbery winner! (The animated film will be out late in 2008.) Other Newbery-winning books-turned-into-movies include: Holes and Bridge to Terabithia. Movies based on Newbery Honor books include: Hoot, Because of Winn-Dixie, Ella Enchanted, Charlotte’s Web and Old Yeller. Then there’s the Caldecott Award (for illustrations). Both The Polar Express and Jumanji (and both by Van Allsburg) were winners. Did you know that Shrek is a book by William Steig? Or that Meet the Robinsons is based on the book called A Day with Wilbur Robinson by William Joyce? The list of kids’ books turned into movies goes on and on… try to read the book whether you’ve seen the movie first or not. It’s always interesting to compare a book with it’s movie version.
