No Child Left Inside

This begins a series of regular messages designed to raise awareness of the benefits for children who spend time outdoors in nature.

Summer is the time for children! Their formal schooling will soon be on hold for many weeks. Summer provides children a perfect opportunity to learn about the natural world and their place in it. Research tells us that regular play time in nature results in better physical health, combats obesity, reduces, stress and results in better emotional health.

A child who just completed a morning program at Fountain Creek Nature Center said, “This is the best day of my life!” He is probably unaware of how plugged-in he and most children are to computers, television screens, and video games. But he was acutely aware of how he felt after spending time in nature.

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts,” says Rachel Carson, author, biologist, and ecologist.

El Paso County Nature Center staff and volunteers commit to re-connect citizens to their natural world and to restore the bond between children and nature! Call 520-6745 or 520-6387 for more information on ways you can get your child outside this summer.
