Special summer Mobile Library stops

City Mobile LibraryCome visit the Mobile Libraries this summer at our summer-only stops. Through August 20, the City Mobile Library will be open every other Thursday (July 9 and 23, August 6 and 20) at the Memorial Park Pool (270 S. Union Boulevard) from 2:15 - 3:15 p.m. The County Mobile Library will be open every Friday from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the Whole Foods parking lot (3180 New Center Point, east of Powers Boulevard) and from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. at Remington Elementary School (at the corner of Peterson Road and Pony Tracks) through August 21. All Mobile Library stops are open to the public.

Altered book program coming to Falcon, Peyton

Altered BookHave you always wanted to tear out pages in a book or rewrite the story like you wanted? You chance is coming to Falcon and Peyton with the County Mobile Library as part of the 2009 Teen Summer Reading Challenge. Come join other teens in altering books and creating pieces of art. Rewrite the ending to a story or create a secret hiding place in a mystery novel.

This program will be offered 2 - 3 p.m. on Monday, July 13 at our Mobile Library stop in Falcon, and from 1:30 - 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14 at the stop in Peyton.

Watch Quetzal’s ode to libraries

On June 12, Quetzal from East L.A. performed at Colorado College’s Armstrong Quad to kick off PPLD’s World Music Series 2009. They closed the show with the funky, improvised song “Librarian Love,” which you can watch below.

World Music Series 2009 There are two more shows in this year’s series, both also at Armstrong Quad (with Armstrong Hall as a rain backup venue) at 7 p.m.: La Fanfare du Belgistan on Friday, July 17 and Issa Bagayogo on Thursday, August 6.

Three free theatre workshops

Theatre MasksThe Missoula Children’s Theatre, the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, will offer these free workshops for children this summer at Pikes Peak Library District. Life on Mars? Try Info Trac Onefile

“Is there life on Mars?” is the question, but what’s the answer you’re looking for? A Google search will provide one set of answers, but are they authoritative? Search the PPLD Catalog and you’ll find a wealth of Science Fiction novels along with some scientific entries. Search popular magazines and you’ll get another perspective. Search academic, peer reviewed journals, and you’ll get yet another. Wouldn’t you like to survey many or all of these options in one fell swoop?

Introducing the PPLD subscription database Info Trac Onefile, provided free to PPLD patrons. This database allows you to search simultaneously more than 4,200 full-text titles; five newspaper indexes — a total of nearly 8,000 titles in all with more than 20 years of backfile coverage from 1980 to present, including magazines, academic journals, books, newspapers, multimedia, and more.

To find Info Trac, go back to PPLD’s homepage, click on Electronic Reference, and then click on the Magazines and Newspapers category. You’ll find it listed alphabetically.

David Lubar making three appearances

Battle of the Red Hot Pepper WeeniesDavid Lubar, popular author of The Battle of the Red Hot Pepper Weenies and many other books, will be making two appearances in the area. No registration is required for these free programs, which are sponsored by the Kirkpatrick Family Fund.

  • Monday, June 29, 5 - 7 p.m. Lubar will participate in a meet and great mixer at Ute Pass Branch (8010 Severy Ave. in Cascade). PPLD Foundation will provide a picnic dinner, with refreshments from the Ute Pass Friends of the Library.
  • Tuesday, June 30, 10 a.m. Lubar will speak, followed by a book signing and discussion at Ute Pass Elementary School (9230 Chipita Park Road).
  • Tuesday, June 30, 2 p.m. Lubar will speak, followed by a book signing and discussion in the East Teen Center at East Library (5550 N. Union Blvd.).

Call for Artists - Gardens: Nature’s Palette

2009 Juried Art CompetitionArtists are invited to depict an aspect of the Carnegie Garden and submit it for consideration in PPLD’s 2009 Juried Art Competition, benefiting the Carnegie Garden.

Jurying

  • Drop off: Wed. Aug. 5, 10 a.m. - noon
  • Pick up: Wed. Aug. 5, 4:30 - 6 p.m.

Artists will be notified of the jury’s decision within two weeks of jurying.

Categories

  • Ages 12-17
  • Ages 18 and older

Entry Fees

Submit up to 3 works at $10 per piece, payable at jurying drop off.

The PPLD Art Evaluation Committee will be jurying art for future month-long, individual shows. Interested artists should bring five pieces of 2 or 3 dimensional art in show-ready format (matted, framed, picture-wired).
