In February, Briargate staff started planning a teen photography program with Christian Murdock, photo-editor at The Gazette. The final product was revealed on June 3, 2006 when The Gazette published photo-essays by all of the twenty teens involved. Some of the photographs were published in the paper, and all of the photographs are on The Gazette’s website . In addition to the photographs and biography of each participant, the students recorded their thoughts about the project and the photographs. The audio is also available on The Gazette’s website.
Christian worked with students from Pine Creek High School, the students’ teacher Tiffanie Davis, and Liberty High School teacher Renee Kayser. The students chose their own topics, and Christian worked with them on improving their photography skills and how to put together a photo-essay. The topics they selected include faith, cancer, cutting, and scars. They sure didn’t avoid the tough issues.
The Briargate Branch hosted a reception on June 3, 2006 along with the opening of the exhibit of the photographs. Most of the student photographers attended the exhibit as well as numerous family, friends, and others. Over 100 people attended the reception. Refreshments were provided, including coffee donated by It’s A Grind. Take a minute to look at this exhibit on The Gazette’s website. It is an opportunity to hear from teens about topics that are important to them.
