2006 World Music Series: Plena Libre

Plena Libre
If you missed the last World Music Series performance, you missed something spectacular.

The second WMS concert of 2006 took place at Colorado College’s Armstrong Hall on Friday, August 18, and man, was that place rocking. The capacity crowd of over 900 people managed to stay sitting through the first song, but after that, Plena Libre had everyone on their feet, dancing, clapping, shouting “Boricua!,” and waving their hands and Puerto Rican flags.

After pulling half a dozen audience members onstage to dance during the final song, Plena Libre marched into the lobby of Armstrong Hall, still playing their instruments, followed by a throng of followers clapping and stomping behind them.

Thanks to the volunteers who helped out on Friday, particularly Penrose Adult Services Librarian Angela Rodzinyak and her four teen assistants, who helped to get fliers passed out and directed folks to the bathroom and balcony locations at Armstrong Hall.

I’d like to thank Colorado College Facilities Manager Thos Lesser for his technical expertise preparing the stage and making sure the band sounded great. Also, I’d also like to thank Colorado College Community Relations Manager Connie Dudgeon for organizing the catering for both the public and the band, helping get the word out about the concert through KRCC, distributing our brochures, and a thousand other things I’m sure I’m leaving out. Connie has been a huge help in pulling this series together.

Last but certainly not least, thanks to the 2006 partners for the World Music Series: Colorado College, Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado, Bee Vradenburg Foundation, and The Colorado Springs Independent for all their support.

If you missed the previous two shows, you’ve got one chance left to attend a free World Music Series Concert this year. Tuvan artists Huun Huur Tu will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Colorado College’s Shove Chapel on Saturday, November 4. Mark your calendars and come join us for what’s sure to be another great show.
