Visiting Writers Series at CC

Azar Nafisi–
Author of “Reading Lolita in Tehran”

Friday, March 30, 2007, 7:30 p.m.

“The Demarest Lloyd Lecture in the Humanities: Azar Nafisi”

Azar Nafisi

Location: Gates Common Room , 3rd floor of Palmer Hall, 1025 N. Cascade Ave., (east of Tutt Library)

Free and open to the public.

Azar Nafisi is the author of the bestselling “Reading Lolita in Tehran.” The book is a blend of memoir and literary criticism, and a moving testament to the power of art and its ability to change and improve people’s lives. In 1995, after resigning from her job as a professor at a university in Tehran due to repressive policies, Nafisi invited seven female students to attend a weekly study of great Western literature in her home. Because the books they read were officially banned by the government, the women were forced to meet in secret, often sharing photocopied pages of the illegal novels. Threaded into the memoir are discussions of the work of Vladimir Nabokov, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jane Austen and other authors who provided the women with examples of those who successfully asserted their autonomy despite great odds. The lecture is part of CC’s Visiting Writers Series.

Sponsored by the Demarest Lloyd Lecture Fund.

Members of the public may call (719) 389-6607 for disability accommodation, additional information or directions.
