TALK English! facilitators needed

Meet community members from around the world and facilitate weekly TALK English! groups. Provide English language learners with a friendly and supportive place to practice informal social conversation. Free training is provided on Saturday, January 10 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Penrose Library (20 N. Cascade Ave.). For more information call 531-6333, x2223.

Read books, win prizes!

Many people read for fun, but wouldn’t it be great to win prizes for reading, also? You’re in luck. Starting January 12, if you read eight books in eight weeks, you’ll receive a free book bag, chocolate, a Panera coupon, a PPLD collectible coffee mug, and get entered into a Grand Prize Drawing. Library seeks applications for Art Evaluation Committee

Pikes Peak Library District’s Board of Trustees is accepting applications through January 30 to fill two vacancies on its Art Evaluation Committee. Committee members review works submitted by local artists for exhibit at all PPLD galleries. Committee meetings are scheduled several times a year and last approximately two and a half hours. Membership terms are two years, with a possible renewal for one additional year. To be considered for appointment, submit a letter of interest with credentials, listing arts-related background information to: PPLD Board of Trustees, c/o Carol Brunk Harnish, P.O. Box 1579, Colorado Springs, CO, 80901.

Holiday Hours at PPLD

All Pikes Peak Library District facilities will be closed on Wednesday, December 24, and Thursday, December 25, in celebration of the holidays.

All facilities will also close at 4 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, and all day Thursday, January 1, in celebration of the new year.

Mrs. Claus comes to Library Channel

Santa Claus gets most of the publicity, but his wife is equally adept at spreading holiday cheer. Want proof? At 5 p.m. on December 19, 22, and 24, gather the kids around the TV (tuned to The Library Channel, Comcast 17, of course) and enjoy The Mrs. Claus Storytime and Singalong Spectacular. This instant holiday classic, shot at the Ute Pass Branch, features Santa’s better half singing songs and reading stories while spellbound children dress up like reindeer.

Donate food for Care and Share

Care and SharePikes Peak Library District will accept donations of non-perishable food for Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado through January 16. Monument and Palmer Lake branches will accept donations for Tri Lakes Cares and Fountain Branch will accept donations for God’s Pantry. The most needed food items include: canned meat and tuna, canned tomato products, boxed pasta, canned meals (chili, etc.), canned fruits and vegetables, canned and bagged beans, canned sup, peanut butter, and powdered milk.

Counterterrorism expert speaking to teens

Pikes Peak Library District and the Colorado Springs World Affairs Council are teaming up to present Morning Missions with the World Affairs Council. These programs, targeted at teens ages 14 – 18, will feature world class presenters on topical global issues.

Fred BurtonOn Thursday, December 11 at 8 a.m., the first offering in this series will bring Fred Burton to the East Teen Center. (Attendance is invitation-only.) Burton is Vice President for Counterterrorism and Corporate Security at Stratfor, the world’s largest global intelligence company. He will talk about how he got into the counterterrorism field and his life as a counter-terror agent. The presentation will be simulcast on The Library Channel, Comcast 17. Burton will answer questions sent in via instant messaging through the widget at ppld.org/teens.

Unleash your inner Socrates
