Watch Deaver’s keynote address

DeaverThe Pikes Peak Writers Conference hosted keynote speaker Jeffery Deaver. A former journalist, folk singer, and attorney, Deaver is an international number-one bestselling author. His novels have appeared on a number of bestseller lists around the world, including The New York Times, The Times of London and The Los Angeles Times. His books include The Bone Collector, The Bodies Left Behind, The Broken Window, and The Sleeping Doll.

The BBB Eye focuses on the economy

The BBB Eye Check out the newest installment in The BBB Eye series. This monthly program is brought to you by the Better Business Bureau and The Library Channel (Comcast 17). It provides consumers with valuable purchasing and community-related information, and is co-hosted by the BBB’s Carol Odell (CEO) and Katie Carrol (Director of Media Relations and Communications). This month’s topic is the economy.

Witness The Power of Print

Page from 1455 Gutenberg BibleThe Power of Print exhibit will illustrate the use of words and images to convey ideas, propaganda, and the merchandising of goods and services. The exhibit will cover the story from the 17th Century to World War II. A unique formal opening will take place in the Penrose Library Carnegie Reading Room on Saturday, May 2 (from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.) with a viewing of the PPLD original 1455 Gutenberg Bible page, a special copy of the Magna Carta, and a spectacular 20 foot graphic of The Great Exhibition of 1851.

The first 200 visitors to the opening event will have the opportunity of choosing a free gift of either a set of the new Lincoln pennies or a mint copy of an old postage stamp issued to honor the 500th anniversary of the Gutenberg Bible in 1952.

The exhibit will run in Penrose Library’s Special Collections through October 31.

Shedding Light by Clarence ShiversShivers Concert Series 2009 presents An Evening with Musicians of National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM). National Free Comic Book Day and Art Career Fair

Free Comic Book DayMay 2 is National Free Comic Book Day. Pikes Peak Library District will partner with Bargain Comics to hand out free special edition comic books at the library.

Pick up a free book, and explore careers in the arts. A local comic book artist will also join us for a drawing workshop. The following events will be held at East Library (5550 N. Union Blvd.) in the community meeting room.

11 a.m. – 3 p.m.: Pick up free comic books.
E. Winfield art
Noon – 2 p.m.: Art Career Fair with the Bemis School of Art, a web designer, architects, landscape architects, civil engineers, art teachers, a cartoonist, an interior designer, and a web designer.

2 – 3 p.m.: A manga and graphic novel drawing workshop with local published author and illustrator E. Winfield (work at right), author of If You Want to be a Pirate.

Creating the Future through art

Dream City 2020PPLD and Dream City: Vision 2020 are teaming up for the Creating the Future art contest. Create visual art, an essay, or poetry about your vision of what the future of our community can or will be. You might win a prize, get published, or have your work exhibited. All entries are due by 4 p.m. on Friday, May 15. Visual entries should be dropped off at East Library, 5550 N. Union Blvd. Literary entries should be submitted electronically to dreambig@dreamcity2020.com.

All works should be accompanied by a contest entry form, available at all PPLD locations or by clicking here. The online form can be printed (for visual entries) or submitted electronically (for literary entries). Please attach literary entries to the same email as the entry form. “Memories in the Making” Art Exhibit

Watercolor A preview of the Alzheimer’s Association Memories in the Making® will be hosted by PPLD in April. The art work is created by people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias as well as professional local artists. The art pieces were selected by a jury of art professionals. The East Library gallery will showcase all 40 of the juried watercolor pieces the entire month of April during library hours. There will be an open house reception on Sunday, April 19 from 2 – 4 p.m. at the East Library (5550 N. Union Blvd.).

Enjoy Earth Day with llamas in the Library

llamaRemember Earth Day by meeting these gentle creatures, hearing about their low impact as pack animals, and learning how their coats can be used for felting, spinning and weaving. Marlice Van Zandt and Michael Shealy from Touch the Earth Ranch in the Black Forest will introduce you to these charming animals.
