Among the characters you will meet are a good duke and his evil brother, a princess and her cousin, two other rival brothers, a very smart but arrogant court jester and the simple country girl he falls for, a shepherdess and the simple shepherd who loves (and annoys) her, and a wrestler. They all end up in the Forest of Arden, some pretending to be other people, all in the name of love and loyalty. Besides learning acting techniques and getting to be Shakespearean actors in full Elizabethan costume, you will paint stage scenery and explore Shakespeare’s world. If you like to act and want to gain some historical perspective along the way, come join us in the Forest of Arden as we present a stage production of scenes from William Shakespeare’s As You Like It.|Students entering Grade 4, 5 and 6 this fall|06/16/08|07/04/08|8:30 - 11:00 AM (M-F)|$210 (Application deadline: March 10, 2008)|389-6146|Colorado College, Summer Program for Gifted Children|14 Cache La Poudre Street|Colorado Springs|CO|80903|www.coloradocollege.edu/dept/ED/childrenSummer/giftedtalented.html||2/27/2008|3/5/2008| 44|America and Its Tipping Point|This workshop will combine a historical perspective of ''World Leadership'' with a Theoretical Model of the Life Cycle of various entities as a backdrop for a current view of where we are today as a nation and where the trends are pointing. Using this concept as a backdrop, we will consider how the various ''threats to America'' may be the catalyst to create the ''tipping point.'' This will not be an indepth technical or academic level workshop. America has spawned more than it’s share of demagogues. From Samuel Parris, one of the instigators of the Salem Witchcraft trials, through the anti-Semitic hatemonger, Louis Farrakhan, demagogues have been an enduring feature of the American political and social landscape. Exactly what is a demagogue? Conventional dictionaries define demagoguery as “a political strategy for obtaining and gaining political power by appealing to the popular prejudices, emotions, fears and expectations of the public.” A secondary and more benign definition describes a demagogue as a “leader championing the cause of the common people in ancient times.” 1920s Baltimore Sun columnist and resident wit, H.L.Mencken, characteristically furnished the most colorful definition when he described a demagogue as “one who will preach doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots.” For good reason, demagogues have been cast as villains throughout modern history. However, this judgment is not universally shared. Many people, even to this day, speak in admiring tones about such characters as Huey Long, Father Charles Coughlin, William Jennings Bryan and Louis Farrakhan.|Seniors|08/14/08|08/14/08|1:30 - 3:30 PM|$22 ($10 members) |633-4991|PILLAR|30 E. In this class you will find out what forged their strong friendship, what drove the two friends apart and how they reconciled. Whether one will visit Germany or not, one can have a taste of the people and their country and be able to recognize and speak enough German to get around. Learning the language from the foundation of grammar will be the emphasis of the class. The class will include fun practice sessions and role-playing. Maps, songs, recipes as well as menus will be used as learning tools. A practice exercise at Edelweiss restaurant is planned. One of the biggest hindrances for language learning is the fear of saying something wrong. This will be a classroom and not a courtroom. Students will encourage each other to try their best and to engage what they have learned.
