Computer Classes

The Tim Gill Center for Public Media Citizen Journalism Course

The Tim Gill Center for Public Media's Citizen Journalism coursework is designed to engage community members with local media outlets via hands-on training in interview and recording skills and radio broadcast production. This four-week class structure is offered quarterly at the Tim Gill Center in partnership with Rocky Mountain PBS and Pikes Peak Library District - Library 21c. Students are invited to discover and discuss the history and intent of citizen journalism, then work individually to produce interviews, feature stories and essays which are available, for free, to partner organizations and local media outlets.

Class sessions begin Monday, August 10 and run each concurrent Monday through August 31 for a total of four sessions. Class is held from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

August 10: Introduction to Citizen Journalism and Local Opportunities
August 17: Field Recording and Studio Interviews
August 24: Audio Editing for Broadcast
August 31: Class Listening Party

A personal recording device (such as a handheld digital recorder) and a personal laptop are recommended for this class. All class sessions will take place at Rocky Mountain PBS/The Tim Gill Center for Public Media, 315 East Costilla Street, downtown Colorado Springs, 80903. This class is open to all age and skill levels, and there is no prerequisite. Those under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent. Each family member must register separately. Class limit: 15 students.

Excel III- 2013 Edition

When: Monday, August 31, 2015 - 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Where: Library21c -1175 Chapel Hills Drive at Petritz Learning Lab

The goal of this class is to learn and better understand different types of references, more complex formulas, and creating macros in Excel 2013.

Prerequisites: Excel I, Excel II, and a strong understanding of computer use. Call 884-9800 to register, or register online.

Introduction to 3D Modeling using 123D Design

An introduction to Autodesk's free 3D Modeling software. Great for those who want to get started in designing their own models for 3D Printing. This class is for advanced computer users who are very comfortable with computer navigation and have experience using a variety of software including Microsoft Office products, but no previous 3D Modeling experience is needed. This class is best suited for students 13 and over. Students 9-11 must be accompanied by an adult.

C3 Center for Public Media Camera & Lighting Class

Basic introduction to studio camera & lighting. Completion of course will allow you access to studio equipment and camera check-out. Must have already taken the 101 orientation and safety course. Course lasts approximately 3 hrs. Patrons 9-13 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Interested in touching up some pictures, but can't afford the price tag for professional software like Photoshop or Corel? Not to worry! GIMP is a free downloadable software you can use at home to accomplish most of your photo-editing needs.

In this class, we'll teach you the basics of how to adjust the lighting in your pictures, crop out unnecessary parts, remove red-eye, edit the foreground and background elements, and more.

This class is for advanced computer users who are very comfortable with computer navigation and have experience using a variety of software including Microsoft Office products. Best suited for students 13+; Ages 9-12 must be accompanied by an adult.
