Hispanics asked to share history with library

“¿De dónde eres?” “Where are you from?” PPLD’s Special Collections staff is asking this question of southern Colorado’s Hispanic community through its initiative - ¿De dónde eres? Cultural Origins of the Southern Colorado Latino/Hispanic Experience and Community.
“I am thrilled to be working on this important project that seeks to preserve the many life experiences of Hispanics in our region,” said ¿De dónde eres? Advisory Committee Co-Chair Dr. José Barrera.

“From the early days of Hispanic settlement in southern Colorado to the influx during the stormy days of the Mexican Revolution in the 1920s, to today’s increasingly complex mix of people from all over Latin America and the Caribbean who call the Pikes Peak region their home, there is a multifaceted and rich culture here that needs to be recorded,” Barrera said. “The ¿De dónde eres? initiative exists to develop and collect oral, written, and visual resources that document the lives, customs, and histories of the southern Colorado Hispanic/Latino Community.”

PPLD Archivist and Committee Co-Chair Rosemary Graham explained, “The Special Collections Archives has not been successful in acquiring collections that document our Hispanic Community. It is important that the archives reflect the region accurately, so we are asking the Hispanic community to share their history with us through interviews and donations of diaries, photographs, business records, and letters.”

Materials will be kept in permanent archives to ensure that the history of the Hispanic community in our region will be available for researchers and the public to explore. If you or someone you know would be interested in being interviewed or have materials to donate, contact Rosemary Graham at 531-6333, x2256 or dedondeeres@ppld.org.
