i really liked this book, only that it's pretty depressing. i mean, it IS about getting over depression, but the way this boy lived was pretty tough to deal with. it's very well written, vizzini often breaks through the tough subjects and cracks a joke. they're not insensitive jokes, just kind of 'lets laugh at life, because we have it' jokes. it's definitely a good read as long as you're ready to learn a bit about the human psyche.

The City of Ember       Jeanne DuPrau

Reviewed by: Catey Yuen

Jeanne DuPrau has been a technical writer for years, but her debut novel The City of Ember proves she has what it takes to become a great fiction writer. In a city lit only by floodlights, where food shortages and blackouts are a normal part of life, a twelve-year-old girl named Lina finds a powerful secret that may save the city. When she finds the smooth black box with an odd mechanical lock that seems to be quite ancient, and a torn-up message inside, she immediately seeks out the help of her childhood friend Doon. Doon has been trying to save the city for several years already, and so, these two young people may hold the key to the future of the City of Ember. DuPrau has crafted a masterful teen novel, suspenseful and moving. She fills the pages of her book with description and dialogue so detailed that the world of Ember is almost real. As another note, The City of Ember is a Blue Spruce Nominee, so if you are looking for a book to read in order to vote for the Blue Spruce award, this is an especially great read for you. All in all, The City of Ember is an incredible book that I would recommend unconditionally.

The Legend of the Firefish       George Bryan Polivka

Reviewed by: Arianne

The Legend of the Firefish is a swashbuckling tale filled with adventure, pirates (or ex-pirates, rather), true love, and a new mythical creature called the firefish. Though not strictly fantasy, this book provides a great look at the human condition and how people relate to others. Packer Throme, a (presumably handsome) young fisher's son, sets out to find glory, fame, and acceptance by joining up with some ex-pirates. His personal journey to discovering who he is and how he fits into his world is incredibly interesting. The humor the author incorporates is an added bonus, and you'll grow to love the main characters. There are two other books in the trilogy: The Hand That Bears the Sword, and The Battle for Vast Dominion. They get better and better as you go along. A must-read for teens who like adventure, and even for those who like fantasy.

The Tattooed Rats       Jerry B. Jenkins and John Perrodin

Reviewed by: Catey Yuen

In a time where demons and angels walk visibly on the earth, all religion has been made illegal, and people are massacred by the government every day, sixteen-year-old Patch tries to make an escape. Living in the Christian Underground with a desparately grieving uncle isn't what he wants his life to be- but neither was being captured, watching the murder of all his friends and being placed with a family who hates him. As Patch refuses to deny his faith and speaks out to his friends in school, he is put in a mental hospital which would brainwash him, were it not for the help of his friend, Nancy, and a mysterious group of Believers known as the Tattooed Rats. Jerry B. Jenkins, famous for his fiction series "Left Behind" and local author John Perrodin team up to make this incredible novel possible. Told in short, fast-paced segments through the eyes of several young men and women, as well as a few supernatural beings, this novel is completely different from any other novel you may have read. This book is also especially good for people who like to have books with deep thought. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Roverandom       J.R.R. Tolkien

Reviewed by: Novfaciel

Roverandom is the story of a little black and white dog, Rover, who lives quite comfortably with an old lady and his ball. One day, while playing with his ball, it rolls into the road and is picked up by a man. When he won't give it back, Rover quite impertenintly bites him on the leg. The wizard, then gets mad, and turns Rover into a tiny toy dog. Rover has many adventures before climbing on the back of a sea gull (for he lived near the sea shore), and being taken over the edge of the world and to the man in the moon. This is the man who keeps all the dragons (on the moon) from making eclipses, creates the most splendid fireworks, makes sure the stars behave, is in charge of dreams, and is a chief wizard himeslf. Unfortunatly, he cannot counteract the spell placed on Rover, because of another spell that's anti-counteracting. Roverandom, (now christened so, because there is already another Rover (supposedly the first Rover ever!) on the moon, and the man in the moon wanted to avoid confusion) and Rover go exploring on the dark side of the moon, only to wake up the most fierceest of all the dragons! He chases them all the way home, and they only escape because the man in the moon used his most powerful fireworks directly on the dragon until he returned to his dark cave. Even then, both dogs had rather singed fur and tails! Then the sea gull returns with news and the mail for the man in the moon, (because how could he get it otherwise?) and when he returns back to Earth takes Roverandom with him. The bad wizard had married a mermaid princess and was now living as the "wizard in residence" under the sea. So Roverandom goes after him, only to be turned into a mer-dog by the princess! There is another mer-dog, also named Rover, and Roverandom believes that THIS Rover is the first one - the one on the moon being prone to rather extensive and elaborate exaggerations. Anyways, during their romping (which Roverandom didn't find as much fun as on the moon with the other Rover) they stirred up the great Sea Monster, who with every twitch of his tail caused great hurricanes and psunami's above land, and massive turbulance and destruction under water. So the wizard is sent to deal with the great Sea Monster, only to anger him more. The mer-people are beside themselves with what to do, until the great Sea Monster tells them that he won't be quiet and go back to sleep until they get rid of the "stupid wizard" who has been disturbing him. Very embarrassed the wizard burns all his magic books, potions, paraphenlia, etc. and then returns to land with his wife (who was very kind in staying with him). Roverandom returns with them, but because the wizard burnt or destroyed all his magical stuff, he cannot now change Roverandom back to a regular dog, although he's very sorry now, and wishes he hadn't hemmed and hawed quite as much as he had. But if you want to find out what happens to Roverandom next, you'll have to read this book. It is a classic among classics, it's just a more hidden one, but that makes it all the more potent and memorable a tale!

Punahou Blues: a Hawaiian Novel       Kirby Wright

This novel is set in multicultural Hawaii and the first person narrator is high schooler Jeff Gill, a child of mixed bloods who must deal with the fact he looks white even though he's part Hawaiian. There's a day called "Killahaole Day" on the island of Oahu where white kids get punched out as retribution for the loss of the land and Jeff is a victim. And he also has to suffer through losing the girl he loves, getting shoved around by a big bully, bad grades, being suspended, and coping with his father's great expectations. He takes boxing lessons from his uncle and challenges the bully to a 'beef' on the golf course during the Hawaiian Open and provides great entertainment to Arnold Palmer and a host of schoolmates. What I like about this book is Jeff's resiliance and determination to carve out a niche for himself in a cliquish private school. He ends up getting into college and finding a girl (a fellow outsider). I would recommend this book to any teen struggling with self-identity issues. The author is also skilled in handling tricky situations like interracial dating!

The Runelords (or Sum of all Men)       David Farland

Reviewed by: Nick Danforth

First of all, you should note, that this is not a teen book. It is an adult fantasy, and though it is written more complicated than most teen books, it is EXTREMELY well written and easy to understand, worded well, etc. It does get off to a somewhat lagging or slow start, but just keep reading and you'll get into it. I was hooked, and immediately after i read it, I started the second book (Brotherhood of the Wolf) which I like even better. This book combines all the keys to make a perfect fantasy. Chase, Adventure, Good vs. Evil, Romance, Escape, Violence, etc. and they all work perfectly together. The characters are well molded and all show individual characteristics. I don't want to say too much about it, but I will say that the system of magic used in it is GENIUS. Lords and kings take "endowments" from people to be strong and fight for their kingdom. For example, a man would give an endowment of wit to his lord. The man would lose all of his wit, and the lord would gain it. In exchange the lord would protect the "Dedicate" and provide him with food, shelter, comfort. All in all, I would give it an 8 out of ten. Take off one point for the lag at the beginning, and another for a few minor mistakes that all books have.

Brotherhood of the Wolf       David Farland

Reviewed by: Nick Danforth

Brotherhood of the Wolf is second in the Runelords Series by David Farland. The first is Sum of all Men or Runelords if you would like to look into it. I have read the first one as well, and posted a review here on it. I don't want to give away too much of the book, so I shall touch on the quality of the writing, and stuff like that. For those of you who have read the first book, you may know that it lags just a tad at the beginning. This book makes up for it. From the minute you start reading you do not want to put it down. It is very well started. It is much darker than the first one, and lacks some of the color and vibrance, but I suspect that it was taken out to make the story feel darker still. The magic system is INCREDIBLY well thought out, a process of peasants endowing certain virtues on their lords, such as wit, stamina, brawn, etc., so they will be strong to fight. It includes everything you would expect in an action fantasy, and while it is an adult fiction, it is very good and well written. 9 out of 10 in my opinion, one taken off for the lack of the amount of color and vibrance of the first. I take my hat off to David Farland. I liked it so much i was living in solitary confinement for a time while I read it. Look into it!!!

If your into, disasters, suspense, and drama,(Oh my!)then this book is defaintly for you. The Posiedon adventure is about a big luxery cruise liner that is hit by a huge roadwave on New Year's Eve and flips, completely upside down in the middle of no where. Now as only a handful of survivors try to to make it through the capsized boat, the race against time is running out. They must make they way to the bottem or hull of the ship. This is not easy, since the whole boat is upside down, and you can't use stairs, or even rugalar hallways to move about. Obstacles, debri, and unfortunately dead poeple are scattered all over the ship. It's a test of skill and endurance, between themselves, there cooporates, the ship and time. It's hard to believe that this book was made in 1969. This book was re-released because of the new Warner Brothers film Posiedon which is now the third remake of this popular story. (if you get the chance, go see it, it's sad with of drama, but you will be pleasently pleased.) The orignal movie is the best compared to the book, but the second and third is nothing to sneeze at and a highly recommend you rent it from your local movieplace. BUT READ THE BOOK 1ST! All in all, I was indeed grateful to read this book, and watch the movies (which are still two weeks late)and i hope you get the chance also. I hoped you enjoyed reading my book/movie review and take my advice. You won't regret it!

They call themselves John Fillet, John Sallow, John Moot, John Drowze, John Pluckitt, John Serpent, and John Slop, but John Mischief is the "head" brother. They lead her to the Islands of Abarat where the twenty-five islands are all in different "time" zones. Each island is an hour of the day and the last island is "time out of time", but no one has ever been there and been able to tell the tale. Candy seems very important to Abarat, something she had never felt back where she came from in Chickentown, Minnesota. She adjusts extraordinarily well to the lifestyle and oddities of the place and performs magic she's never been of having using words she can't remember learning. Something strange is going on and Christopher Carrion, the evil Lord of Midnight, has a desire he cannot place for the schoolgirl from the Hereafter, the Arabatian name for where Candy comes from. He's not the only one, however. Rojo Pixler, a businessman with the goal to conquer the world, wants Candy to take him back to the Hereafter so he can conquer that, too. Candy has other plans and, with the help of several new-found friends, sets off to discover her purpose in this place that feels more like home to her than Minnesota ever did.
