Harry Potter Questions & Answers

Ok, so maybe like you, I’m reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Fortunately I have an expert at home (Jory) who’s reread all Harry Potter books again…and again….and possibly again. I go to him for answers to Harry Potter questions. It’s hard to remember back through all the books sometimes! Anyway, if you have a Harry Potter question write it in the comment box below. I’ll ask the expert at home and post the answer.

When did malfoy gain control of the elder wand, so harry could become the true owner of it? I missed it somewhere, was it when malfoy was told to kill someone early on in the book by voldemort.

Malfoy became the owner of the elder wand at the end of the 6th book when he disarmed Dumbledore.

Why did Nearly Headless Nick get exacuted? Did he commit crime or was he innocent?
August 11th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
The question about Nearly Headless Nick was fun to find. There’s a good website: The Harry Potter Lexicon that says that Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington (Nearly Headless Nick) was a wizard who died 500 years before in a botched execution. Another website called
hp-encyclopedia.com says that Nearly Headless Nick “was put to death without trial for trying to straighten a woman’s teeth and afflicting her with a tusk.” It sounds to me like Nearly Headless Nick was an innocent wizard but got into a lot of trouble for messing up a spell.

wat is voldermort’s patronus??i know he cant be capable enough to conjure a happy thought because of the evil in him, but just for curiosity, if he was able to ….wat would his patronus be????let me know
October 18th, 2007 at 4:52 pm
I found these 2 comments on a blog and I think they make sense:
1) ” I don’t think Voldemort has a patronus because it is derived from a very happy memory. Voldemort probably hasn’t been happy a day in his life, which is why he is so evil. However, IF he did have one, it would be a snake…no doubt.”
2) “Voldmort might possibly not be able to conjure a Patronus becasue is most often used to protect someone against evil. And he is the untimate evil. If he is able to conjure one, I think it would most likely be a serpant.”
Otherwise, I have not found anything online or otherwise about Voldemort’s patronus.
Great question! Thanks.

In the 6th book, why did’nt Dumbledore just poor the potion on the ground? Did he HAVE to drink it?
November 7th, 2007 at 12:49 pm
Sydney : Yes, he had to drink it…. there was a spell that kept the horcrux in the basin, and in order to reveal it you had to drink it.

how can you make house elves wash cloths without setting them free?
December 17th, 2007 at 11:18 am
you order them to do it and put in the disclaimer ‘on no account are these clothes being given to you, your job is purely to wash them; they do not belong to you’.
December 18th, 2007 at 6:52 am
House elves can be given an order but not the item of clothing.
Clean my clothes! but you don’t give them the clothing.

How does Professor Dumbledore know what other people see in the Mirror of Erised, if it only shows “your” heart’s desires?

Ok, Raymond, I’ve been researching your question about the Mirror of Erised and Dumbledore (#13 above). I submitted your question to a Harry Potter discussion forum on Wisegeek.com and got this response: “Dumbledore is probably pretty good at Legilimency (mind reading), he’s good at most other magic.”
Then I looked on a site called Harry Potter Wiki and found this definition of legilimency: “Legilimency is the act of magically navigating through the many layers of a person’s mind and correctly interpreting one’s findings.”
So, putting both quotes together, I’d say that Dumbledore could know what Harry was thinking and therefore knew what his heart’s desire would be.
I hope this answers your really good question.

where does Profssor dumbledor preserve his thoughts
May 27th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Wisegeek.com has tons of Harry Potter facts and discussion. I think the answer to the last comment above (about Dumbledore’s thoughts) is the pensieve. Here’s a quote from Wisegeek.com:(referring to the pensieve) “Dumbledore says that he uses it to store thoughts that are weighing on his mind, or to organize memories which seem to be connected.” Check out the further description of how the pensieve can be used on Wisegeek!

who is ron’s sister?
December 6th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Ron’s sister is Ginny (Ginerva Molly Weasley is her full name.)

actually, snape became the true owner of the elder wand when he KILLED dumbledore. disarming the beholder of the wand doesnt make it yours. only when the life of the owner is taken, then the killer becomes the owner. snape was the true owner, until voldemort killed him, and then truely had control over the wand.

would voldemorts patronous be a snake?? i meen, he was a parsolmouth, he spoke parsoltounge, he spoke to snakes. the flag of sltherin has a snake on it. Voldemort(tom marvolo riddle) made the chamber of secrets which had to be opened by speaking parsoltounge to a sink that is enblazoned with a snake. the monster down the chamber is a basalisk, which is a snake. it all fits perfectly if you jiggle it aroud. so i thing voldemorts patronous was a snake, but he might of lost it when he lost his powers to harry. which is why harry is very good at casting patronouses
June 3rd, 2009 at 9:43 am
That is a very good question. I’m not Jory, but I read it and decided to put my two cents in. The books never tell us what Voldemorts patronus is and he never produces one, but I think your theory may be right in some aspects. Harry is very good at casting patronuses maybe in part because of the powers he got from Voldemort, but he also has some very happy, powerful memories that help him produce such a stron patronus. Voldemort probably has no need to cast a patronus seeing as he controls the dementors… If he had one though, I’ll bet it’s a snake.

Why can Death Eaters block spells?
June 12th, 2009 at 11:58 am
From the Harry Potter Lexicon: “Albus Dumbledore captured the Death Eaters who had been fighting in the Department of Mysteries and held them with an Anti-Disapparition Jinx (OP36).” (Jinxes are part of defensive magic.) So, at least a jinx from Dumbledore affected the death eaters, but I’m still looking.
June 12th, 2009 at 11:59 am
The death eaters instill fear–which would prevent spell casting.
June 19th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Ok so in the fifth book Harry tells the death eaters that voldermort is a half-blood. Why do his death eaters not care that voldermort is a half-blood?
June 24th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
well…. i would guess it doesnt matter because they are all terribly afraid by his power

Who is the new headmaster?
Which Weasly twin dies?
Does Percy talk to his family again?

Here’s a Wisegeek.com response to #15 question above:
This is directly from the live chat with jk rowling through bloomsbury (UK publisher)
Allie: What did dumbledore truly see in the mirror of erised
J.K. Rowling: He saw his family alive, whole and happy – Ariana, Percival and Kendra all returned to him, and Aberforth reconciled to him.
so now we know for sure that it wasnt socks =)
He saw the same thing harry did; his family.

Jory, I am the expert to and I wanted to say that people may or have already wanted to know what Harry Potters wand is made of. Its the tale of a phinix. I also know that in the deathly hollows someone will die. And it will be someone expected. so don’t be to surprised if you read it and you can guess. But what I can tell you is that it will not be Herry Potter. I think that it is Herry potters 15th birthday and that he gets to use magic unattended. It is also his last year at hogwarts and the book is the final Chapter book in the series. But… J.K Rowling has put out another book called… the Tale of Bettle The Bard. To prove accuracy.. I will tell you that I have the book. The book is about a bunch of enchanted storys and then Dumbledore simply makes fun of them. That is all I can tell you.
Thank you for your time,
Andrew

In harry potter half blood prince, they find a piece of paper with the initials R.A.B in the locket. who is this that has the horcrux.
October 12th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
R.A.B. is Regulus Arcturus Black, younger brother of Sirius Black. Regulus became a death eater when he was 16 but had a change of heart. He was murdered when he was 18. See this helpful page: http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Regulus_Black
